Research
St George Hospital – Cancer Research Program
A key area of research for Associate Professor Yong Li, Head of Cancer Research at St George Clinical School is the development of new treatments of cancer.
Research by the school:
- Investigates the mechanisms of prostate & ovarian cancer metastasis and the drug and radio-resistance associated with tumour microenvironments, and cancer stem cell (CSC ) & epithelial-mesenchymal transitions; and
- Investigates novel biomarkers from human body fluids for cancer diagnoses, and the monitoring of cancer progression.
The aim is to develop targeted cancer therapies and combination therapies to control micro-metastatic prostate cancer and ovarian cancers.
Targeted therapies mean that patients are likely to live longer and with a higher quality of life, as the treatments have less risk, less side effects and a greater impact on the cancer.
